HOWARD A LOS LAKERS

Se ha convertido en el ‘culebrón’ del verano, pero por fin el traspaso de Dwight Howard es una realidad. El pívot jugará en los Lakers junto a Pau Gasol y Kobe Bryant, después de fraguarse una operación a cuatro bandas que envía a Andrew Bynum a Philadelphia.

A falta de confirmarción oficial, éste es el trade que ha permitido al hasta ahora ‘center’ de los Magic vestir de púrpura y oro el próximo curso: Los Lakers reciben a Howard; los Magic a Al Harrington, Nikola Vujecic, Arron Afflalo y al rookie Moe Harkless -primera elección de Philadelphia en el último draft-; los Nuggets a Andre Iguodala y los 76ers a Jason Richardson y a Andrew Bynum.

Finalmente Pau Gasol no entra en la operación, tal y como se rumoreó a lo largo de la tarde del jueves, y formará parte de un tremendo quinteto titular junto con Steve Nash, Bryant, Metta World Peace y el propio Howard.

Not since Wilt Chamberlain was traded (to San Francisco) in 1965 and then again three years later (to Los Angeles), and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was dealt to the Lakers in 1975, have the NBA’s most dominant big men been involved in such a momentous transaction. Indeed, the relocating of Andrew Bynum and Dwight Howard qualifies as the Deal of the Century.

Disregarding salary cap implications and potential buyouts, let’s take a closer look at what the individuals involved might bring to their new teams.

DWIGHT HOWARD TO THE LAKERS

He’s obviously a dynamic rebounder and shot-blocker, but there are several cautions that must be noted. The first, and most important, being Jimmy Buss, who has inherited the management of the Lakers from his father. It was Buss the Younger who inhibited Andrew Bynum’s development by making excuses for his young center’s every mistake and generally catering to the many manifestations of his immaturity.

It was Buss who insisted that Bynum be the focus of Mike Brown’s offense. With Howard in L.A. on a trial basis, expect Buss to bend over backwards to spoil his new big man and insist that, like Bynum, the offense must be centered around Howard. The impact on the team’s overall chemistry must necessarily be disruptive.

Also, since Howard’s crude offensive did not improve much under the tutelage of Patrick Ewing in Orlando, he isn’t close to being a go-to scorer. Moreover, with his extremely limited range, Howard will clog the lane, severely restricting the sphere of influence of Steve Nash. Indeed, the last time Nash was paired with a pivot-bound big man (Shaquille O'Neal in 2008-09), the Suns were decidedly mediocre.

Plus, Howard’s being anchored in the pivot continues to reduce the multi-talented Pau Gasol into being largely a jump-shooter.

To take full advantage of Nash’s skill-set, Howard will have to learn to set sturdier picks than is his wont, and also to make more forceful rolls hoopward. And with Howard’s pitiful performance at the stripe, he will receive minimal touches in the clutch.

In addition, in Howard’s eagerness to block every shot he sees, he’s often out of position and therefore unable to provide the kind of rim-protection that he should. In other words, despite all the awards and hoopla, Howard’s defensive prowess is somewhat overrated.

But here’s the worst aspect of Howard’s game plan: Because of his dim-witted immaturity, he’s a loser.

EARL CLARK TO THE LAKERS

A one-on-one scorer who can’t do anything else. A useful 12th man, who can sometimes have a brief impact in an emergency.

CHRIS DUHON TO THE LAKERS

An adequate backup point guard whose game gets worse the more he plays.

ANDREW BYNUM TO THE SIXERS

His offensive moves are much more refined than Howard’s but his defense is slightly more confused. When to fully commit to lane-penetrators and when to just show-and-recover? Another question: Will Doug Collins exert enough of an edge to provoke Bynum into showing up for every game?

Although Bynum is an inferior passer and tends to turn the ball over when doubled, in the long run and if he stays healthy, he just might develop into a much more rounded, and therefore more effective, player than Howard. On the other hand, Bynum’s sometimes laissez-faire work ethic might stall his development and make him another NBA player who never quite achieves his full potential.



ANDRE IGUODALA TO THE NUGGETS

He’s the third-best player involved in the transaction. An excellent defender, improving three-point shooter, willing passer, and perfect third option on offense behind Wilson Chandler and Danilo Gallinari, Iguodala is definitely a step-up from the departed Arron Afflalo, and exchanging his defense for Al Harrington’s erratic offense is another plus.

JASON RICHARDSON TO THE SIXERS

He’s a potent scorer off the bench, which almost compensates for his subpar defense.

ARRON AFFLALO TO THE MAGIC

This guy can play both ends of the court and his game has improved on an annual basis. He’s now a dangerous three-point shooter and almost a stopper on defense. He’s by far Orlando’s biggest get and could be the sleeper in his new team’s haul.

AL HARRINGTON TO THE MAGIC

A scorer. Period. Harrington excels at creating his own shots but lacks any degree of consistency. Strictly a bench-player. If he misses three consecutive shots during his initial rotation, he should immediately be yanked and given a similar opportunity during the second half.

NIKOLA VUCEVIC TO THE MAGIC

A big, slow, relatively unathletic player who can’t defend without fouling and has limited lateral movement. At best, he’s a backup center.

MOE HARKLESS TO THE MAGIC

Rookies are always an unknown quality. A power forward at St. John’s, he’ll get his minutes as a small forward until he does his due diligence in the weight room. Might or might not be a key component in Orlando’s rebuilding process.

JOSH McROBERTS TO THE MAGIC

A hustling banger who specializes in dispensing hard fouls.

CHRISTIAN EYENGA TO THE MAGIC

Supremely athletic, but remains a long-range project who will only play in blowouts.

The most significant benefit that Orlando will reap from this colossal deal is the multiple first-round picks they have collected from Denver, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.

THE GRADES

LAKERS: A-minus.

PHILADELPHIA: B-plus.

DENVER: B.

ORLANDO: C-plus for now, INC for the future.

os Lakers han despedido a su entrenador Mike Brown, según ha confirmado su representante, Warren Legarie. Como suele pasar en estas ocasiones, la franquicia angelina le había mostrado su respaldo pocas horas antes. La última derrota del equipo se produjo en Utah, en un partido en el que Kobe Bryant fulminó a su técnico con la mirada. Ese gesto pudo ser tan decisivo como los malos resultados: 1-16 sumando los dos últimos partidos del año pasado, las 10 derrotas de pretemporada y el balance de este curso.

El conjunto de Los Ángeles ha sumado cuatro derrotas en los primeros cinco partidos y en la actualidad es el peor equipo de la Conferencia Oeste. La defensa, clave en el juego de Brown, encaja 98,8 puntos de media y su falta de fluidez en ataque les hace perder el balón en el 20% de sus posesiones, más que ningún otro equipo de toda la NBA.

La destitución puede ser una liberación para Brown. La crisis de los Lakers empezaba a salpicar a su familia. Su hijo Elijah estaba recibiendo amenazas de muerte de aficionados angelinos a través de Internet. "Mi familia no tiene nada que ver con lo que está ocurriendo", dijo el técnico, que sólo ha durado una semana y media de competición.

Los Lakers juegan esta misma noche en el Staples Center ante Golden State. Mike Brown ya no estará en un banquillo para el que han sonado nombres desde el comienzo de la temporada. Los que más: Mike D'Antoni y Jerry Sloan.

Parece que Phul Jackson va a ser el nuevo entrenador.

Mike Bresnahan publica que D'Antoni firmará por cuatro temporadas y que los Lakers han decidido no apostar por el regreso del 'Señor de los Anillos', que "pedía la luna", para sustituir al discutido Mike Brown.

John Black, el portavoz de los Lakers, explicó que "El Dr. Buss, Jim Buss y Mitch Kupchak fueron unánimes a la hora de señalar a D'Antoni como el mejor entrenador para los Lakers en estos momentos".

El célebre agente Warren LeGarie, representante de D'Antoni, también ha confirmado la operación.

Mike D'Antoni, uno de los entrenadores de la NBA con más fama de apostar por el juevo ovensivo, mantiene una buena relación con Steve Nash (al que entrenó con éxito en los Suns) y Kobe Bryant (con el que ha trabajado en el equipo de Estados Unidos).

El ex entrenador de Nuggets, Suns y Knicks tiene un balance de 388 victorias y 339 derrotas en sus 10 años como primer entrenador en la NBA.

En Italia fue entrenador del Olimpia Milano entre 1990-1994, el equipo en el que triunfó como jugador (1978-1990) y se consagró como uno de los mejores bases del baloncesto europeo en los años 80, y de la Benetton de Treviso (1994-1997).

¿Pau Gasol a los Minnesota Timberwolves de Ricky Rubio?

ESPN TV, apoyándose en las cábalas del periodista especializado David Aldridge, ha desatado la liebre. Se podría estar cocinando un traspaso a cuatro bandas y el español Pau Gasol estaría implicado. El ala-pívot de los Lakers se marcharía a los Timberwolves de Minnesota, donde haría pareja con el español Ricky Rubio. Los Wolves también recibirían a Kim English, procedente de Detroit.

A los Lakers, por su parte, llegarían Derrick Williams y J.J. Barea (Wolves), Trevor Ariza, que volvería a casa procedente de los Wizards, y Jonas Jerebko (Pistons).

Los Wizards se harían con los servicios de Charlie Villanueva (Pistons), Nikola Pekovic (Wolves) y Chris Duhon (Lakers). Por último, a Detroit llegaría Emeka Okafor.

Las turbulencias asedian a los Lakers, que contemplan varios posibles escenarios en cuanto al fichaje y venta de jugadores. El mal inicio de temporada ya se cobró la destitución de Mike Brown. El estilo D'Antoni reclama otro tipo de jugadores, y Pau Gasol podría ser de nuevo el principal damnificado.

A los 27 años y cuatro meses de edad, Howard, líder reboteador de la NBA (12,4 de media, por delante de Nik Vucevic), se convierte en el jugador más joven que supera la cifra de 9.000 rebotes (9.017): más joven incluso que Wilt Chamberlain.
